Tour de Broads

New Routes, Venue & Date!

Sunday 23 August 2015 at Strumpshaw Hall, Norfolk

Covering 7 broads and over 16 broads villages, two new routes, no car park headaches, no queueing, no sign-on on the day - just rock up, relax and ride!

Welcome along to the third Tour de Broads family cycling sportive. There are two routes available on the day, the Epic Ride (73 miles) and the Challenge Ride (40 miles).

Challenge the family to our 3 mile ride and enjoy some free expert coaching and a bike health check. Why not bring a workplace team, your sports club or group and ride for your favourite charity.

The longer rides offer a personal challenge with electronic timing available to record your achievement, a t-shirt upon completion and a very warm welcome home to assure you of a great day out.

As a social enterprise, all profits from the event are reinvested into local cycling projects such as the Great Yarmouth bike Project.

A bit about the museum....

The Museum of the Broads looks forward to welcoming you to our unique and tranquil riverside setting at historic Stalham Staithe. Our displays show how people lived from Roman times to today. Visitors can meet marsh men, boat builders, sailors, photographers, authors, naturalists, scientists, local characters, and wildlife. And on certain days, we also offer a river trip on our steam boat, 'Falcon'. 2015's special exhibition is on Beer and Brewing in Broadland. Many of the Museum's boats, tools, and other items are unique. Photos, pictures and boat plans can be viewed digitally on computer screens, and we have created an audio guide tour using the voices of our volunteers. There are plenty of children's activities too. The Museum is staffed by a Curator and over 70 volunteers who welcome visitors and give them a taste of Broadland's heritage. The Museum is family and dog friendly, and is fully accessible. The Museum of the Broads is a registered charity which aims to bring the history of the Broads alive for local people and visitors alike.

Pro Cyclist Deano to join Tour de Broads

Special guest cyclist Dean Downing will be joining the tour to ride around the Norfolk Broads.

Since returning to the UK in 2007, Dean has won over 50 races in both road and circuit races around the world. Dean has been British Circuit Champion in 2002 and 2008, along with Madison Champ on the track in 2003 with his brother Russell.

Dean said he is looking forward to riding this part of the country:

"I grew up racing lots of grass track events throughout Norfolk when I was younger, in places like Mildenhall and Ely, but I haven't really ridden on the roads in The Broads, so I'm really looking forward to taking in the scenery."

Dean retired from professional racing last year, ending his racing career at road racing team NFTO Pro Cycling. During his time racing Dean rode with Rapha Condor and Madison-Genesis teams. His main role now is coaching with TrainSharp with Jon Sharples and Sean Yates.

Come and meet Dean, ride with him and have a beer afterwards, at this year's Tour de Broads!

Norfolk's Cycle Response Team

Norfolk's Cycle Response Team will be cycling 40 miles to save lives on 23rd August in the Tour de Broads.

Team Leader, Dominic Wade (middle pic, left), promises to cycle the whole route in full uniform on a fully stocked cycle response bike, as if getting through the 40 miles wasn't enough.

All funds raised will go towards supporting Norfolk's Cycle Response Team, which will be the difference between life and death for emergencies in city centres and crowded places where a quick response is essential.

Robin's 5 to ride in 2015!

Tour de Broads

As a personal injury lawyer, I would often come into contact with those wo have suffered from occupational related cancers.

Many will have heard of mesothelioma, a cancer caused by past exposure to asbestos, a very cruel disease where life expectancy invariably becomes very short.

Cancer has touched my family and friends at various times and I am sure will continue to do so. My nan sadly passed away in 2013 after a long fight against cancer. She wanted donations to be made to cancer charities instead of flowers being placed at her funeral. Rather than just make a donation, I decided to take part in the London to Paris cycle challenge in 2014 for Macmillan Cancer Support. It was such an experience that I decided to do it again in 2015. But I want to do more. The UK is facing a cancer crisis and by the end of 2020, almost one in two of us will face cancer sometime during our lives.

We need help to make sure that cancer care is prioritised to help tackle this looming crisis. Now, more than ever, Macmillan need help to make sure no one faces cancer alone.

So, in order to do my bit to help, I plan to take on 5 challenge events, cycling more than 1,000 kms over the course of my 5 to ride in 2015 which are;

  • Etape Loch Ness - 26 April 2015 - 110 km
  • London to Paris 1-5 July 2015 - 500 km
  • Prudential Ride London Surrey 100 - 2 August 2015 - 160 km
  • Tour o' the Borders - Sunday 9 August 2015 - 124 km
  • Tour de Broads - Sunday 23 August 2015 - 117 km

All of these events apart from Ride London, have Macmillan Cancer Support as their Charity partner and this seemed like the ideal challenge for me, a 40 something cyclist, there's a special name for us! You can also follow my progress through training and each event here.

Love the Broads Charity

Love the Broads at the Tour de Broads

For the Tour de Broads this year we will be donating to the Love The Broads charity.

The Broads is Britain's magical waterland, a fragile wetland of international importance.

Love the Broads is a scheme that provides an easy way for you to donate a small amount of money to a range of projects that are vital for the conservation of the Broads and which will also benefit our local communities.

Love the Broads at the Tour de Broads

The Broads Trust, which operates the fund-raising scheme, awarded grants in 2014 of over £8,000 to 5 projects aimed at keeping the Broads special. The money, to support wildlife, environmental and education projects on the Broads, has been raised from donations from visitors, Broads tourism businesses, the Eastern Daily Press and others. We are very grateful for everyone's support.
